Lutheran Approach to Bible Study

The Bible is known by many names.  In the church it is also referred to as Scripture, God’s Written Word, and God’s Holy Word. ELCA Lutherans also refer to the Bible as our “Book of Faith.” At Good Shepherd, faithful engagement with our Book of Faith is a vital part of our daily life together as it helps to nurture our faith and points us to Jesus and the lives we are called to live as Christians.

As Lutherans, we believe that studying the Bible is most faithfully done in community. While individual Bible study also enriches our understanding of God, Jesus and faith, having conversation with others about what we hear and see when we read the Bible helps us to hear and understand it more completely. Engagement with our Book of Faith with one another strengthens our community and leads us out into the world to serve the needs of our neighbors.

In our Bible studies we read Scripture together, ask lots of questions, read and listen to what Bible scholars and teachers can bring to the conversation, and we listen to one another. We may end up with more questions than we have answers, but we are okay with that.
